A final gasp, if you will, of all the promises made at the beginning of the season. And frankly, it’s exhausting. Yes, I am blessed to have friends and things to do, and doubly blessed because I am no longer working in a corporate day job, allowing me time to enjoy my life. Not everyone has that luxury. I don’t remember how I survived before retirement.

The weather so far this summer has been particularly wonderful. There have been very few days where the heat and humidity were an issue. I love sitting in front of my open office window first thing in the morning with my cup of tea, soothing music in the background, and feeling the cool air on my face. These early mornings remind me of my rural childhood with its slow, lazy summer days. July and August seemed to go on forever, and we weren’t constantly on the run. We would wait in the fresh morning air for the bus that took us to the community pool twice a week (except the two weeks when we had swimming lessons every day). Sometimes, I can recall the exact smell of the water and how it felt against my skin. I miss those warm sunny days at the pool followed by evenings of hi-jinx with my cousins and friends from the neighborhood.

For the past couple of years, I have taken August “off.” I don’t write. I don’t try to accomplish anything except being in the moment, because the days and nights are so full. By not putting expections on myself in August, I can enjoy the things August in Central New York offers. There are baseball games, concerts, wedding anniversaries, birthdays, clambakes, and parties. I don’t need to fret because I haven’t met a word count or responded to the book cover people about their latest rendition, or any of dozens of other things an independent author does. Yes, I’m still blogging and sending out newsletters, but that’s the extent of my work. Reading in bed in the morning is a luxury I usually don’t allow myself . Except in August.

Because “real life” returns in September, as inevitable as a Monday morning, and Sunday–or August–is a time of rest.

I always feel as though society crams as much as it can into August, the last complete month of unofficial summer.
