The other afternoon, my husband asked me if I heard a cat. I did not. Several hours later, a neighbor knocked on my back door and asked if we owned a kitten. She’d seen one under her porch the previous day then saw it in our front yard. She was shocked that the tiny bit of fluff had made it across our very busy street. The kitten had ducked into a hole under our front porch.
I tried to entice the baby out, and it was talking to me, but no luck. My neighbor put out some water and wet dog food in an effort to lure it from its hiding place. At some point, something ate/drank her offerings.
The next afternoon, while I sat on my patio, I heard the kitten again. I looked everywhere around where I was sitting, but saw no sign. I again tried to talk to it, but failed to receive a response.
Then I heard rustling and the kitten cried out in terror or pain. I will never know which. After that? Silence.
I could not find a sign of it anywhere. I looked. I sat outside again each day, at different times, both in front and in back, but found no sign of the kitten.
I felt like one of those videos on social media showing kitten rescues, but my story didn’t have a happy ending.
